Reviews from the Adelaide Fringe!

It’s been a fantastic first two weeks at the Adelaide Fringe. We’re now half way through and our first couple of reviews are in totalling 14.5/15 stars! We had fun shooting this pic for the Adelaide Advertiser as well. It’s a hard life!

“These boys are euphonically pleasing beyond their years and each one of them is a five star performer in their own right. Put them on your Fringe ‘must do’ list.”

“Fall in love with The Magnets all over again and don’t miss these sonically blessed singers.”

an energetic, charming, & eclectic performance that can be enjoyed by kids & adults alike…my earballs are still tingling!

Last Christmas…thank you George.

A few days before Christmas, whilst on tour in Germany we decided to record our version of “Last Christmas” by George Michael. James Fortune, one our founder members who now is part of the management team had done an excellent arrangement that mashed the song with Joni Mitchell’s “River”. So after a hurried trip into Frankfurt to buy some festival decorations we sat down before our last show of the year to record the song. It took us a few takes to get it done what with some false starts, dodgy tuning and the occasional fit of the giggles, but we finished and were pleased with the result. As a final farewell to 2016 and a thank you to fans we put it up on Christmas Eve.

The very next day George Michael passed away at home in London.

Now we’re pretty sure it wasn’t our video that finally did for George (we can’t be sure though), but regardless we were very sad to see the passing of such a mercurial and special talent. For most of us in the group George Michael was the voice of our youth with his massive Wham! hits and songs from his solo career. Our video doesn’t really come close to being an apt tribute to the man, but it’s what we’ve got and we’re proud to put it out there.

So thank you George for sharing your amazing songwriting and very very special voice with all of us – you touched us all.

This year has been one of our best ever and we decide to freshen things up with a new website. Hope you’re going to like it! You will be able to check out our new amazing new showreel ‘The Naked 80s’. More content will be added over the next few weeks and watch this space for details of our plans for 2019-20, including gigs in Germany, Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, and also a brand new recording project. There are also a few surprises to come. You’ll also see a tab for our quartet, M4GNETS, who have already been touring including a sell-out UK arena with Young Voices.

About The Magnets

Like Pitch Perfect with cojones, The Magnets are an a cappella super-group featuring the hottest vocal and beatboxing talent on the international a cappella scene and London’s West End. The band revolutionised British a cappella in the 2000s by combining virtuosi vocal percussion with glorious harmonies, and have gone on to become a must see act on the international music scene, playing festivals and theatres worldwide.

The Show

A night with the Magnets showcases the sheer versatility of a cappella performance. From Rat Pack to Rock Band, Nashville to Nightclub, The Magnets own each genre, effortlessly switching scene with their trademark inventive choreography and lashings of audience engaging charm.

Current highlights include crowd-pleasing classics Feelin’ Good, Minnie the Moocher and Jolene, Sam Smith’s beautiful Lay Me Down, and a brilliant mash-up of the Jackson 5’s Can You Feel It and Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake. If that’s not enough, are you ready for Aqua’s Barbie Girl in eight different musical styles?

From the Beginning

From modest student beginnings as street performers in Covent Garden, The Magnets have had the joy of introducing millions to a cappella music for the first time in concert, on radio and TV. Their richly varied career has seen them sign a major record deal with EMI, release four albums, support superstars such as Tom Jones, Blondie and Bryan Adams, and play private shows for supermodels, heads of state and royalty.

The Magnets pivotal role in the UK a cappella scene was recently acknowledged with a special feature on Gareth Malone’s The Choir, and the band are currently enjoying the upsurge in interest in a cappella music around the Pitch Perfect movies and new groups such as Pentatonix. This wave is enabling the group to take their music further afield than ever, touring Australasia, India, China regular in recent years. A new album is planned for 2017 as well as returns to the Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, tour dates in China, India and Europe and much, much more.
